SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Notre Dame dealt with a mobile quarterback in beating Purdue last week. Now the Irish have a much bigger challenge: Stop Michigan's Denard Robinson, an even faster QB who keeps the ball and likes to run with it. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday there's a big difference between defending Purdue's Robert Marve, who could move in the pocket, and the speedy Robinson, who carried 29 times last week.
Before last season, Martha's Vineyard coach Donald Herman wanted to get the ball in the hands of Randall Jette more, so he moved him from wide receiver to quarterback. But while Jette has certainly taken to the quarterback position, his best position is on the defensive side of the ball, where he ranks as one of the best cornerbacks in the state. "He's an exceptional defensive back and an exceptional athlete," Herman said of Jette, who already holds an offer from Bryant University.
Sept. 07--It's No.2 Ohio State vs. No.12 Miami on Saturday, an intersectional matchup that will serve as an early sorting point in the race for a berth in the BCS national championship game. You know, the same game in which Ohio State upset Miami in double-overtime for the 2002 national title. "I know our folks are looking forward to this opportunity just like you are," OSU football coach Jim Tressel said today at his weekly media.
Sept. 05--Woodland Hills' upset bid was short-lived. Two third-quarter interceptions and a lost fumble cost the Wolverines a chance to keep pace with high-scoring and highly ranked Manatee during Saturday night's 39-16 loss in the marquee matchup of the Rally at the Wolvarena. Woodland Hills led, 10-9, early in the third quarter when Devon White caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from Jevonte Pitts.
Sept. 07--CHEYENNE -- Mack Brown was impressed by this group last season. And the Texas football coach's impression of the University of Wyoming's defensive secondary hasn't changed heading into Saturday's game in Austin, Texas. During Monday's Big XII Conference coaches teleconference, Brown described UW's Gipson brothers at cornerback -- Marcell and Tashaun -- as pro prospects.
Sept. 07--Don't look for Kansas State's season-opening victory over UCLA to change Bill Snyder's scheduling philosophy any time soon. But he did acknowledge that getting past UCLA, 31-22, might shed more light on the Wildcats than last year's 21-17 escape against Football Championship Subdivision opponent Massachusetts. Contrast that with last year's 23-9 loss at UCLA, where they rallied to make it close, only to fade down the stretch.
Sports, the Heisman Trophy Trust is close to completing its investigation in the wake of the NCAA's findings that Bush was ineligible during the 2005 season. It also says the Heisman Trust will not award a second trophy and will instead leave the honor for 2005 vacant. In June, the NCAA said Bush and his family received impermissible benefits, including plane tickets, hotel rooms, limousine service, housing, appliances, furniture, several thousand dollars and a car.
NORMAN - Playing big-time college football is not an easy thing to do. Oklahoma's defensive backs proved that over and over in Saturday night's season opener. Jonathan Nelson, Jamell Fleming and Demontre Hurst are, by all accounts, good football players.
Sept. 07--AUBURN, Ala. -- Arkansas State just recovered its second fumble, primed for another quick-strike touchdown early in the second half Saturday when Auburn's defense finally woke up. Following a short gain, Tigers linemen Nick Fairley and Antoine Carter sacked quarterback Ryan Aplin on consecutive plays, forcing a punt and effectively ending the Red Wolves' offensive momentum. Although it's only one game -- one the Tigers played without suspended All-SEC linebacker Craig Stevens -- it's not too different from last season, when Auburn's defense bore no resemblance to shutdown units of the past, surrendering a school record 358 points.
